This will be a part of Nexium’s clinical development programme which will include research to discover new uses for the drug, as well as other medicines.
Nexium, which is indicated for the treatment of heart failure, is currently marketed by AstraZeneca under the brand name Prilosec, which is manufactured by Merck & Co.
It is the second-most-used generic drug on the market and will be sold by AstraZeneca on the market by 2016.
The agreement will allow AstraZeneca to obtain Nexium in the US from the EMA under certain conditions and from AstraZeneca in certain other markets.
